With only two games remaining for most teams, the FSSL Championship race is now in the home stretch and CABS is firmly in the driving seat. As things stand only a miracle can make them stumble. That miracle would be FBC winning both their remaining matches and CABS losing their remaining two matches. Such an unlikely turn of events would take FBC’s points tally to 47 while CABS’ tally remains at 46.
Joking about the correction of an anomaly in which a set of three points belonging to Ecobank had erroneously been attributed to Payserv, FBC’s Tawanda Mumbengegwi wondered if such fortune might also come their way.
“Are there any anomalies on FBC that could lead to an additional 6 points?’ asked Mumbengegwi.
While this may be just banter meant to help FBC swallow their pride and concede that the title race is all but lost, it also illustrates how their fate is no longer in their hands and how it depends on what CABS does or does not do. Let’s explore some of the scenarios.
Both Teams Lose or Draw Their Last Two Matches
If both teams lose their last two matches, the status quo would be maintained and CABS would walk away with the title. The same would apply if both teams draw their remaining matches.
Photo Finish
If the two teams were to end up with the same number of points, FBC would win it since they have a better goal difference, assuming this stays the same and CABS does not improve their goal difference. A photo finish can only happen if FBC wins their last two matches to end up with 47 points while CABS loses one match and draws the other to also end up with 47 points.
Against these daunting statistical improbabilities, FBC appear to have thrown in the towel and shifted focus to the FSSL Paynet Cup Tournament and the Interbank Games.
“CABS have taken it. We are now looking at Payserv Cup and Interbanks,” said FBC defender Kudzai Kwangwari.
