FSSL Holds AGM… As New Executive Takes Office
The Financial Services Soccer League (FSSL) held its Annual General Meeting (AGM) at FBC OH Sports Club on the 17th February 2018 ahead of the start of the 2018 soccer season. The annual meeting, which must be held before the commencement of the season in accordance with the association’s constitution, was attended by twelve (12) members from six (6) of the ten (10) clubs that are currently affiliated to the league. MFSB Sport attended the meeting by invitation and witnessed the proceedings.
Elections Usher in New Executive
On the agenda were presentation and discussion of the Chairman’s, Treasurer’s and Referees’ reports followed by elections, which were conducted by the referees’ representative Garikayi Makwera and ushered in a new executive for 2018. In a massive vote of confidence, almost the entire old executive was retained with the exception of the outgoing Secretary General (Emmanuel Tapera of CBZ Holdings) who opted not to run for office again because of pressure of work and coincidentally, was replaced by his CBZ Holdings colleague, Norbert Thulani Mhike. The 2018 Executive Committee lines up as follows:
Title | Office Bearer | Institution |
Chairman | Kudzai Kwangwari | FBC Bank |
Vice Chairman | Titus Sanangurai | Old Mutual |
Secretary General | Norbert Mhike | CBZ Holdings |
Treasurer | Ivan Vambe | CABS |
Fixtures Secretary | Peckins Kamupira | ZB Bank |
Patrons Godfrey Marongwe-Nkosi (ZB Bank) and Mubaiwa Mubayiwa (Standard Chartered Bank) were retained as the association’s patrons while clubs were expected to second committee members at a later stage.
Affiliation Fees
The meeting resolved to increase club affiliation fees to $350 (up from $300 last year) given the increase in the general price levels since the last meeting. In the forthcoming season, the association will also redouble efforts to engage teams in the insurance sub-sector in an effort to entice them to join the league.
Player Quota System
Turning to player affairs, the AGM maintained the quota system under which each team is allowed to register some non-staff players. However, the maximum number of such players that can be registered by a club for the season was reduced from seven (7) to six (6), with only four (4) non-staff players eligible to play at any given time.
Highlights of the Outgoing Chairman’s Speech
2017 Winners Congratulated
Kudzai Kwangwari, who started the meeting as outgoing chairman and ended it as incoming chairman, congratulated FBC Bank for winning the league title, ZB Life for winning the 2017 FSSL Paynet Cup Tournament as well as the players who received individual awards.
2017 A Successful Year
Clubs were also complimented for showing up for most of the games, meaning that there were very few walkovers during the season. “2017 was a successful year as we did not have any arbitral issues. The level of discipline and sportsmanship is highly appreciated,” said Kwangwari.
FSSL Paynet Cup Tournament
The FSSL Chairman thanked Payserv Zimbabwe for its continued partnership with the League on the end of year tournament, which was more vibrant in 2017 with arguably one of the best launches to date, graced by the likes of CAPS United gaffer Lloyd Chitembwe and ZBC TV sports news anchor Ian Zvoma. He also commended the MFSB for covering the proceedings of the tournament much to the satisfaction of the sponsor (Payserv). Kwangwari also hailed the launch of SoundGarden Publishing’s website, which will enhance the league’s publicity options at a time it (the league) is keen to enhance its profile.
Kwangwari took note of the pioneering inclusion of the of “the girl child” through the participation of women’s teams Mufakose Queens and Cyclone Stars at the 2017 tournament, with Payserv undertaking to ensure that more women’s teams will partake in the 2018 tournament, including those from clubs affiliated to the FSSL.
“I also urge the incoming Executive Committee to fairly rotate the hosting of events so that sports clubs are supported as they are the reason some teams continue to exist… I do hereby challenge the incoming Executive Committee to surpass what the outgoing team has just done for the 2017 edition by looking at the negatives and transforming them into positives,” said Kwangwari, unaware that he was about to be re-elected. Well, the FSSL chairman and his colleagues in the new executive have their work cut out – they have to outdo themselves, apparently. – MFSB Sport
