Old Mutual (0) 0

FBC inched closer to clinching the 2017 FSSL league title with a clinical 4-0 demolition of Old Mutual (OM) in their penultimate match of the season played on 14th October 2017 at the FBC OH Club.  Having won this  top-of-the-table clash which Team Manager Mr Marowa called “crucial”, an FBC fan said  they needed just  a draw in the last match to become champions again as they have a superior goal difference to Stanchart who can finish the season with the same number of points if they win their last match and FBC draws. Coached on the day by Bernard Mutambara, FBC came into the match trailing log leaders Standard Chartered Bank by a point so this was a must-win match for them. Marowa said their strategy was  to be “first to the ball” and score early goals and they did just that. The result meant that they reclaimed the top spot from StanChart.

FBC’s goals all came in the first half courtesy of a brace from Andrew Chiguvare (14th & 31st minutes), Abiot Murenzvi in the 28th minute and a penalty by Terence “Jemba” Malunga in the 42nd minute. The penalty was awarded after a foul on goal-bound left winger Abiot Murenzvi.

With nothing to lose, Old Mutual came back from the break a rejuvenated side and their pressing game gave FBC a few things to think about. The boys from the diversified financial services group, clad in all white, were not only determined not to concede more goals but wanted to score.  In trying   to claw back, the Cuthbert Mutamiri-coached Old Mutual created a number of chances in the first quarter of the second stanza but were wasteful in front of goal. But take nothing away from FBC because they were simply unyielding. FBC goalie “Gumbura” who came in for first choice goalkeeper Simbarashe Leeroy Nyakaswa who suffered from  dizziness in the first half, did well and made a number of fine saves.

Class 2 referee Ronald Chinyani (28) handled the match, assisted by veteran Shame Rongedzai.
